Integrative Mental Health Care & Wellness for Women in Coffee Farming
SANA is a social-impact initiative fiscally sponsored by American Friends of Bean Voyage, known as Bean Voyage, a U.S. registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, securely processed, and go directly to delivering mental health care & wellness programs for women in coffee farming in Colombia.
What We Do
Provide mental health care and wellness for women in coffee farming communities in Colombia through a 5-month integrative program that combines teletherapy, education, and community-based support.
Theory of Change
We believe that true gender equity starts from within. At SANA, we foster spaces where women in coffee farming break cycles of silence, strengthen their emotional resilience, and gain agency to navigate their personal and professional challenges, to thrive, not just as farmers, but as leaders and change-makers. Because when women are healthy and heard, they spark powerful ripple effects—transforming themselves, their families, communities, and the future of coffee.
Women in coffee farming often face overlooked mental health challenges. In Colombia, they make up 26% of the coffee workforce, yet systemic gender inequities like unpaid labor, income gaps, limited leadership roles, and domestic violence increase their risk. Globally, 1 in 5 women experience mental illness—vs. 1 in 8 men—and stigma in rural areas discourages seeking help. Access is scarce: most Latin American countries spend under 2% of health budgets on mental health, with only 2.8 psychologists per 100,000 people, mainly in cities. Even where services exist, women’s triple burden leave little time for care, fueling anxiety, depression, absenteeism, and economic instability.
The Problem

LEANIS
“This program helped me overcome obstacles I didn’t even realize I had, which was a huge step forward both personally and professionally. I confronted the hidden sadness that had weighed me down since childhood. The experience was truly transformative—not just for me, but for my family. My relationship with my daughter and husband has improved so much.”
Your $25 monthly gift gives a woman coffee farmer full access to the SANA program, supporting her mental health and well-being.
Our Journey
2023
Launched Pilot Program “Beans to Minds"
Pilot program was funded 60% by proceeds from We Belong book and 40% by individual and corporate donations.
39 women coffee farmers & pickers from Colombia enrolled and completed the pilot program from July to December.
2024
Model was Reviewed & Formalized
The concept, model, and approach were shown to be highly impactful based on the data and feedback from the 39 participants
Based on feedback, we developed new elements to the model, all with the aim to make the program both accessible for the participants and scalable to reach more women.
2025
SANA was Born!
American Friends of Bean Voyage became our fiscal sponsor, giving us the possibility to receive tax-deductible donations and ensure all funds go to execute our programs.
Our 2025 goal is to enroll 120 women coffee farmers from Colombia in a SANA program.

Right now, a woman coffee farmer is facing her struggles alone. But tomorrow? She could be prioritizing her mental health and improving her well-being in a supportive community—because of you.
